Royal Canadian Legion Branch 147 puts $140,100 OTF Grant to work

Barrie, ON – On Wednesday, MPP Doug Downey stopped by the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 147 to hear more about the difference that a $140,100 Resilient Communities Fund grant awarded by the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) has made to their operations. Doug Jure, an OTF volunteer, was also on-hand and spoke to how the granting program was developed to help non-profit organizations rebuild and recover from the impacts of COVID-19.

“Ontarians honour our veterans, not just on Remembrance Day, but all year long,” said Doug Downey, MPP for Barrie-Springwater-Oro-Medonte. “The Barrie Legion is an integral part of our city. It is a community space that brings us together; to remember, to celebrate, to enjoy and stay connected. I’m grateful for all that the Legion offers to our community, and I am thankful that OTF funding has been able to help them invest in needed upgrades, and prepare for growth and our future generations.”

When the Legion received word of the grant earlier this year, it began to concentrate on creating a strong financial plan, coupled with strategic organizational plan that would involve: marketing, communications, fundraising and technology to help position it for the next five years and beyond. The grant is also helping the Legion to upgrade its software, buy PPE for staff, and making needed renovations to the main floor and entrance lobby.

"The impact of this Ontario Trillium Foundation grant cannot be underestimated,” said Marcel Vigneault, President, Legion Branch 147. “This grant has allowed us to seriously plan for the future and upgrade various areas of the building with significant improvements. We want our Legion to be a destination for not only our veterans and members but the public as well.

The Legion is committed to preserving this space for remembrance and recognition. The public is always welcome and the Legion will remain accessible for many community activities and events.  If you wish to enquire about using the space for your meeting or hosting an event, please visit the website at:
