The Poppy Campaign
Honouring Those Who Serve
Every year, from the last Friday of October to November 11, millions of Canadians wear a Poppy as a visual pledge to honour Canada’s Veterans and remember those who sacrificed for the freedoms we enjoy today.
While the Poppy is distributed freely to all who wish to wear one, the Legion gratefully accepts donations to the Poppy Fund.
What is the Poppy Campaign?
The Poppy Campaign is very much a local initiative, conducted by Legion Branches in cities, towns and communities across the country. This show of support and display of remembrance would not be possible without the efforts of thousands of Legionnaires who volunteer to distribute Poppies to the community through schools, community organizations and local businesses. We are so grateful for their efforts, and for the support of the many partners, local and national, who welcome Legion volunteers and Poppy boxes into their locations.
Donations collected during the Poppy Campaign are held in Trust at the branch level to directly support Veterans and their families within their community and in support of endeavours at a District and Provincial level.
2020 Covid Pandemic
In 2020, the year of the Pandemic, the Barrie Legion was prevented from sending personal volunteer canvassers out into the public. And many schools and businesses were prevented from being open.
But in spite of these difficulties many citizens made an extra effort to seek out those business that were open and did have a Poppy box to provide a donation. Many also came to the Barrie Legion with a personal cheque and many local business owners raised additional funds to show their support.
In total, the 2020 Poppy Campaign raised over $100K for the Barrie Legion.
The Barrie Legion Poppy Trust has used a large portion of these funds to assist many individual veterans in our community and in support of local community organizations including the Army, Navy League and Sea and Air Force Cadet Corps. The funds have also allowed us to support our Barrie Legion Bursary and Youth Education programs. In addition, a significant donation was made to Hospice Simcoe. The Barrie Legion Poppy Trust Fund has also provided donations at our Legion District “E” Hospital Fund, and Operation VetBuild program. And at the Ontario Command level we have also made contributions to the Ontario Provincial Charitable Foundation Program and Operation Service Dogs.
