YOUTH EDUCATION

The Royal Canadian Legion is committed to ensuring the tradition of Remembrance remains relevant to and supported by younger generations. We promote youth-specific education regarding Veterans and Remembrance through a range of local and national initiatives

The Barrie Legion encourages local schools to promote Remembrance Day Ceremonies, and our Branch is frequently involved in supporting those ceremonies. Remembrance is also promoted through the Legion’s school-aged poster and literary contests. These contests see more than 100,000 students each year honour Canada’s Veterans through creative art and writing. As well, the Barrie Legion distributes Poppies and educational materials and offers schools the opportunity to have a speaker share stories and experiences about Veterans and Remembrance with the children.

Our 2023 Remembrance Poster and Literary Contest saw over 280 submissions from Barrie area schools. The February 2024 Public Speaking Competition had 14 students competing. In the Junior Public Speaking grouping, Josephine Zyle was the winner. The Intermediate Winner (Grades 5 thru 8) was Sabrina Guerrero while the Senior Winner (Grades 9 and above) was Lydia Bystrov. These three individuals now move on to the District and potentially the Legion Provincial Competitions held later on in 2024.
